✦ Scripture for Grief & Loss ✦
When Words
Fail Us
God’s Word holds comfort for every kind of loss — at funerals, at bedsides, and in the quiet of grief.
✦ A Word of Comfort ✦
Grief is one of the most honest places a human being can stand. When we lose someone we love, we are brought to the edge of what we can bear — and that is exactly where God meets us.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18π The Shepherd’s Psalm
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalm 23:1–4 (ESV)God Does Not Stand at a Distance from Our Pain
He draws near — specifically to the broken, the crushed, the grieving. These verses remind us that grief is not a sign of weak faith, but an invitation into deeper trust.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4“Jesus wept.”
John 11:35The Resurrection Hope
For the believer, death is not the end — it is the doorway. These are the words of Jesus Himself, and the promise of what awaits those who are in Him.
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
John 11:25“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Philippians 1:21“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:8The Promise of Heaven
God’s final word over death is not sorrow — it is glory. These verses look ahead to the world that is coming, where every tear will be wiped away.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
John 14:2“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38β39Comfort for Those Left Behind
Grief does not end at the graveside. For those who remain, these verses carry the promise that God does not abandon us in our mourning.
“LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.”
Psalm 90:1“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
Psalm 30:5“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22β23For Those Who Died in Christ
The Christian hope for the dead is not silence — it is resurrection. The dead in Christ will rise.
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16“Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.”
Psalm 31:5Closing Prayer
Lord God, we stand in the shadow of loss. We do not always have words — but You hear the grief that goes beyond words. You are the resurrection and the life. You are the one who wipes away every tear. Comfort those who mourn. Hold those who are broken. And remind us: this is not the end. Because of Jesus, the grave does not have the final word. We trust You. Amen.
